THIS FABULOUS ANTIQUE French Sterling Silver Asparagus Tongs with unique patented grip mechanism by Alphonse Debain, active 1883-1911, Paris, is presented here for your consideration. This Asparagus Tongs are wholly made of the finest quality French sterling silver .950 purity and decorated in gorgeous Art Nouveau and Rococo style, featuring intricate scroll and rich variety of foliage accents, centred by a fierce lion's head. Hand-engraved monogram with interlaced letters in a cartouche on both sides.

The technique used to create the pattern is called Repoussé (embossed). A sheet of silver is heated and the pattern raised from the reverse side using tools of different shapes. It is done by hand and difficult to master. This Asparagus Tongs are an example of the amazing craftsmanship of the ingenious manufactures of the period.

Hallmarked 1. French Minerva No.1 mark (twice), which guaranteed .950 purity sterling silver, used in Paris since 1838. This is one of the finest quality sterling silver, higher than standard .925 sterling silver. 2. Maker's mark of Alphonse Debain, 79 rue du Temple, active 1883-1911. 3. Patent sign "Bte S.G.D.G" (=Brevete Sans Garantie Du Governement. Twice).
